The Place

Just outside Nebraska City, Nebraska, is a lonely stretch of road, officially known as Road L, that cuts through the rolling rural hills.

But locals know it by another name – Seven Sisters Road.

The Legend

According to local legend, a farmer in the 1800s had seven daughters. One day, the farmer snapped and descended into madness. One by one, he lured his daughters out of the farmhouse and into the darkness.

The story says he hung each daughter from a tree atop each of the seven hills along the desolate road.

Today, people say you can hear women screaming or wailing when you drive down the road at night. Other stories claim that engines stall, headlights dim, or car batteries mysteriously drain.

Notes

There are several versions of the legend. In some, the father is responsible for killing the seven sisters; in others, it is a brother who kills his seven sisters.

I’ve found no evidence that seven women were murdered along this stretch of road.
